Sherwood Castle Holiday Forest

For my Husbands birthday this year I wanted to do something a little bit different, something just the 3 of us. So I decided to book us a weekend away. My chosen location was Sherwood Castle Holiday Forest which I booked through Hoseasons. I'm so pleased I chose this. Having been there before 10 years or so earlier I knew it was the perfect setting for a relaxing weekend with or without children. We weren’t disappointed.

Set in a small woodland forest in the peaceful village of Rufford, Newark this holiday park is home to some quaint log cabins mainly set with the woodland itself however there are some with a lake view setting. The entire park has an authentic feel to it with its reception building built to look like a castle and is even home to various original film props from the Kevin Costner movie Robin Hood Prince of Thieves which you find around the main area of the park. Inside, the reception area is actually built from a film prop.

We stayed in a 2 bedroom Harmony lodge which was the perfect comfortable base for us for the weekend. With its fully equipped kitchen (including a dishwasher, Mum win) and central heating, this cabin did not disappoint. The lounge and kitchen in this cabin were open plan and the kitchen was small but the bedrooms were a very good size. Some of the cabins have log fire in the lounge however, with a toddler we didn’t really think that was our best option. Our bathroom had a shower but some cabins have baths or spa baths. It depends on which band of cabin you book.

The holidays here are self-catering but there are plenty of options for takeaways and a large Tesco very close by.

We spent our first day on site wandering around, taking Quinn to play in the indoor soft play they have and then onto the animal corner where they have Sheep, Goats and Chickens. You can even mingle with the sheep which Quinn really enjoyed, she’s such an animal lover.

Day 2 we spent the morning at the Sherwood Forest visitor centre which is probably about a 10 minute (if not less) car journey. There is just something so beautiful about walking around forests and woodland areas at this time of year. I find it so beautiful with all the colours, the leaves on the ground and wrapping up nice and warm in hats and scarves. We had our lunch at the visitor centre in the on site restaurant which serves a range of hot and cold food.

We all had such a great weekend staying here, one of those weekends where you just connect as a family which was lovely especially as both my Husband and I work full time so it’s nice to get in weekends like this just the 3 of us.

Some of the day activities and facilities on site are

  • A small shop
  • Swimming pool
  • Soft play
  • Indoor play activities
  • Outdoor activities including a park, crazy golf
  • Archery centre
Plus more

If you are looking for a quiet relaxing break away with or without children I really recommend this place. We definitely intend to visit again soon and trying one of the larger cabins.
